Here’s a situation: It is 1 AM and the wasps were coming through the living room walls. It is an uncomfortably hot August night with a full moon. What do you do? First, let’s figure out what you are dealing with.
Bees, wasps and hornets are different
When you picture these insects, you probably think of the colors black and yellow. Bees, wasps and hornets are all insects, but that doesn’t mean they are the same. There are about 30,000 different species of wasps alone. Wasps generally have a narrow waist.
Your Home Is Vulnerable To Hornets
Hornets are basically untamed mini-animals living in an ecosystem. It just so happens that you, your family and your home all live in that ecosystem. Often times your home is the ecosystem.
Hornets can set up a nest near your house during the summer. Hornets are aggressive and will attack pets if they get too close. Hornets will attack you and your children if they feel threatened.
Hornets can get out of control
Hornets are like weeds. It is important to pull up weeds before they spread throughout your whole yard. The more weeds you have, the more weeds you will get. The same is true of hornets. The more hornet nests you have, the more nests you will get. The more hornets around, the more likely you and your family are to encounter them which can lead to bee stings.
Bee Stings Hurt
Hornets use a hypodermic needle to inject painful toxins. These strings hurt. For some people these are just a nuisance and can be easily ignored. While for other people, the consequences can be severe. Some people are allergic to the venom and will go into anaphylactic shock and stop breathing. It is recommended these people carry Epi Pens.
Hornet Killer Sprays Can Be Effective Treatment
You can kill hornets and wasps with Raid and other sprays available at Lowes and Home Depot. The directions are available on the packaging, but generally, you stand about 7 feet away from nests, aim then nozzle at the nest, and spray. It is recommended you apply it early in the morning or late in the evening when the wasps/ hornets are least active.
